This article is not intended to replace proper medical care. These are fundamental steps, but sometimes they become much more important than what we do later at the hospital.
Important Steps to Follow :
- Observe for any bleeding. Major bleeding can quickly become fatal if not immediately managed.
- Hemorrhage rarely demands a tourniquet application. Firm bandaging can control all ordinary bleeding. A tourniquet is only needed in case of profuse bleeding that persists despite firm pressure over the wound.
- When it is necessary to move a patient with a long bone fracture, it has been found that pain is lessened if traction is applied to the limb.
- Temporary immobilization of the lower limb can be easily achieved by bandaging the sound leg.
- Supporting the upper arm by bandaging it to the chest while moving the patient may provide support.
- Any piece of a stick can be used to support a long bone fracture while transporting the patient to a hospital.
- Special care is necessary during transport if a spinal column fracture is suspected; otherwise, the injury may worsen.
- Also, it is important to avoid bending the spine as it may cause further injury to the spinal cord.
- Patients should be lifted onto a firm surface with care to avoid bending and extending the spinal cord.
- If a cervical collar is available, it should be applied to protect the neck when moving the patient to the hospital.
